Engaging Students in Service (July 18-19)

This educational development workshop, presented at the newly expanded 9/11 Tribute Museum, engages teachers in innovative ways to teach 9/11 to students by highlighting the remarkable service and volunteerism that arose in the aftermath.

In this 2-day program, family members, survivors, rescue and recovery workers and residents of Lower Manhattan will share their stories of healing through helping others. In the new Tribute galleries, participants will experience additional stories of 9/11 foundations that have reached out globally to support other communities impacted by trauma and loss.

Educators from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Facing History and Ourselves will guide teachers in designing lesson plans and activities for students to bring this experience to the classroom. Their talks will illuminate how first-person narratives can motivate students to take initiative in strengthening their own communities through service.
